This post is entitled ’5 Food Groups that can slow down your Metabolism’ and I have included a brief exert below (the full version is available from Wellness Junction). If you have any comments, feedback or know of any additional foods that can slow down your metabolism please let me know by leaving a comment on either this page or the full article.

5 food groups that can slow down your Meabolism

“In my last Wellness Junction article I discussed four food groups that can help you boost your metabolic rate. Diet is a very important aspect of keeping your metabolism high and eating the right food is a big step in the right direction. However, you also have to make sure that you are avoiding foods which may hinder your success. In this article I will be discussing five food groups that can seriously slow down your metabolic rate.

1) SUGAR:- Eating too much sugar overloads your body and causes your blood sugar levels to rise rapidly. This in turn makes your body go into conservation mode meaning that you will store extra fat and burn less calories. To make sure this does not happen you need to reduce your intake of refined sugars as much as possible. That means cutting down on the candy, chocolate, cakes and cookies as much as possible. If you still want something sweet try eating some fruit. Unlike refined sugars, most fruits contain fructose which does not cause your blood sugar levels to rise…”

Hey Tom, I wanted to tell you that I have really enjoyed your posts on the metabolism – fix that and you fix a lot of other issues. I particularly like that you give clear and practical ideas on how to boost our furnace without using pills or doing anything crazy, just easy everyday things, the way it should be. Thanks.

Thanks Spin Diva. Thanks for the positive feedback. From what I have read diet pills and patches have limited benefits at best and a lot of the ingredients can be found naturally in foods. My view is that sticking with a sensible diet and exercise plan is almost always a better solution than the synthetic options that are available.

Excellent post! I found this information very useful. Aren’t we all trying to figure out how to speed up our metabolisms so this is great information. I need to cut back on the sugar but I just love it!

Hi Heidi. I’m not too bad with sugar. I think the biggies for me are fried and processed foods. I am OK during the week when I am working and my eating schedule is pretty much planned out. However, on the weekend I tend to not be as organised when it comes to eating which then leads me towards fried and processed foods.

  3. Well I must say that i use white bread every day-I simply like it, and alcohol but only sometimes for weekends. xD
    By the way great post

Hi Montoya. I too was a long term white bread eater until just a few months ago. I had bad memories of how brown bread tasted when I was a child. However, I eventually decided to give it another try and it actually didn’t taste that bad. In fact it tasted quite good. Maybe my taste buds have evolved. Anyway, since then I have never looked back and stuck to the brown bread.

As for alcohol it is difficult to give up completely (as I mention in the article). I do not think I will ever be able to give up alcohol completely and I do over indulge on the odd occasion. However, I do try to moderate my consumption more closely than I used to and I think I am doing a lot better than I was a year or 2 ago lol.

how much sugar should i consume ?

Hey Nelson. Thanks for the comment. Technically all carbohydrates are sugars but many of these are naturally occurring. For processed or refined sugar it is recommended that you consume no more than 40g per day. Processed/refined sugars are unnatural, man made products and not a necessary part of your diet. If possible they should be avoided completely. You can get more than enough natural sugars from fruits and vegetables which also provide your body with essential nutrients such as fibre, minerals and vitamins.
